2026 MAZDA CX-5 vs 2026 Jeep Compass in Burlington, WA
If you’re thinking about buying the 2026 Mazda CX-5 as your next vehicle, then you may be wondering how it stacks up against the competition. Another popular compact SUV is the 2026 Jeep Compass, which we will pit against the Mazda in this review. We at Skagit Mazda will reveal which one surpasses the other by looking at their engineering, interior, and tech.
Performance
Let’s start our exploration by looking directly at how they make power to take on the streets of Burlington. The Mazda CX-5 is prepared with a standard 2.5L SKYACTIV-G 4-cylinder engine that makes 187 horsepower and 186 lb.-ft. of torque. The Jeep Compass uses a standard 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder unit, creating 200 horsepower and 221 lb.-ft. of torque. In terms of their drivetrains, the Mazda vehicle emerges with a standard i-ACTIV AWD® to help you traverse the wet roads of the Pacific Northwest a bit easier. The 2026 Compass is also equipped for off-roading with its standard 4WD, but that system is not always as useful on suburban streets. The Mazda has a SKYACTIV®-Drive1 6-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode, while the Jeep comes with an 8-speed automatic feature, so the former will provide a more engaging drive.
Interior
Both the 2026 Mazda CX-5 and the 2026 Compass have similar front-row legroom with 41.7 inches and 41.8 inches, respectively. However, the Mazda has more second-row space with 39.9 inches, while the Compass has 38.3 inches. That roominess is also extended to the total cargo space within the vehicle, as the Mazda CX-5 provides a total of 66.5 cubic ft. of cargo space2 and the Jeep Compass only has 59.8 cubic ft. of room3. You’ll also find differences in the levels of opulence that each car has to offer. The Mazda CX-5 has an available 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with a 2-position memory setting, but the Jeep Compass seems to focus on utility more than relaxation with its available 8-way power-adjustable pilot’s chair. Still, you can find seating for five passengers in each model.
Technology
Solidifying its spot ahead of the competition in this case, you’ll find that the Mazda SUV comes with a standard 12.0-inch touchscreen center display, but the Jeep has a 10.1-inch standard display with the Uconnect®5 kit. Your entertainment options are also improved with the Mazda CX-5 and its standard 8-speaker audio system, an improvement from the standard 6-speaker setup in the 2026 Compass. One commonality between the two is found in the standard driver information display, which measures 10.25 inches for both vehicles, so you’ll see your speed as you drive to Maiben Park in a similar manner. Both vehicles also provide an available wireless phone charger4,5 to help you restore the battery life of your phone without using a plug-in cable. While the Jeep has a slight edge in raw power, the Mazda provides a more sumptuous ride and more high-end entertainment, so stop by our convenient location for a test ride.

Testimonials
“ We recently bought a new Mazda cx30 from Dwayne Lane in Burlington. If you go there ask for Bobby Green. He answered all our questions, was extremely helpful & really was knowledgeable about their inventory. Helped us get the right fit for us. Bobby was so polite & respectful; I can’t say enough good things about him!! Our search for a car started that day & ended with our purchase that very week. We didn’t need to look any further…. ”
“ Called asking for info on my 2021 Mazda 3 Sport today & Lee in parts was super helpful. Thanks again Lee! ”
“ I have been here twice so far for vehicle service. I live 5 minutes away from Edmonds Mazda. Going up to Dwayne Lane's Skagit/Burlington Mazda is totally worth the extra hour's drive. The check in proces, the information, the way they share what is really necessary, what should be repaired or replaced soon and what to keep an eye on. I never feel pressured and when I ask what is most important considering my budget, they will explain it to me. Both times, they said the less expensive needs would be ok for now but the other services should be completed at next one to two visits. They send a video recap of the inspection and it is easy to follow and personalized. Not robotic and not full of mechanical jargon that a regular layperson wouldn't understand, me. They thoroughly explained why they couldn't work on some after market changed made by previous owner but told me they could and would recommend switching back to OEM, explaining the pros and cons of each option. Prices are straight forward and estimates usually come out at midpoint. For a dealer service garage, this is nearly unheard of. I will be happy to return for my due 60k service as soon as possible. I know most people will not drive an hour out of the way but if you are heading up that way or live up that way, give them a shot for your next oil change. Oh and they have loaners, although I waited and it was quick. Will need that next time though. 2020 Mazda CX-5 Signature Turbo AWD. ”

“ My experience with Dwayne Lane Skagit Mazda was, without question, the worst vehicle purchase and service experience I have ever had. This experience involved a brand-new 2025 Mazda CX-90, and what should have been an exciting purchase turned into a months long ordeal that ultimately resulted in a Washington State Lemon Law buyback. The problems began before we even took delivery of the vehicle. Our sales consultant, Wilson Rich, ordered the wrong vehicle, claiming that it is difficult with all the vehicle codes Mazda uses. I was able to look at Mazda dealer websites and easily determine whether a CX-90 had captain's chairs in the second row or not. Rather than simply correcting the mistake and making things right, we were pressured by the sales manager at the time, Michael Credle, to keep a vehicle that we never ordered and did not want. Michael's tone quickly changed from "get what you want in your new vehicle" to essentially asking us to make sacrifices because the dealership had made a mistake. What should have been a straightforward correction turned into an uncomfortable experience where we felt pressured to accept the dealership's error, and that was not going to happen. During the first seven months of ownership, our brand new 2025 Mazda CX-90 spent a staggering 63 days at the dealership for repairs, diagnosis, and service visits. No customer purchasing a new vehicle should spend nearly a third of their ownership experience without their car. What made this experience even more frustrating was how our concerns were handled by the service department. On multiple occasions, service advisors suggested that we simply turn up the radio so we would not hear the noises and symptoms we were reporting. Being told to mask the symptoms of a problem rather than address the problem itself is unacceptable, especially on a brand-new vehicle. We were also repeatedly told that many of the issues could not be duplicated. Eventually, I was asked to participate in a test drive with members of the service department because they claimed they were unable to reproduce the problems. During that test drive, the very issues we had been reporting for months immediately presented themselves—even before leaving the dealership parking lot. The transmission concerns and other problems that supposedly could not be duplicated became obvious once dealership personnel witnessed them firsthand. Instead of listening to the customer and aggressively pursuing a resolution, our concerns were repeatedly minimized, dismissed, or explained away as normal operating characteristics. We lost count of the number of trips back to the dealership, the amount of time spent without our vehicle, and the frustration of being told everything was normal when it clearly was not. After months of dealing with unresolved defects and repeated repair attempts, we ultimately pursued a Washington State Lemon Law claim. The outcome speaks for itself: the vehicle qualified for a Lemon Law return and was bought back. A successful Lemon Law claim is not awarded because of minor inconveniences. It occurs when substantial defects cannot be repaired after reasonable opportunities. The fact that we reached that point after repeatedly being told there was no problem says everything prospective customers need to know. I would never purchase or service another vehicle from Dwayne Lane Skagit Mazda, nor would I recommend them to friends, family, or anyone looking for a dealership that stands behind its customers when serious problems arise. After this experience, we have completely lost confidence in both the dealership and the Mazda brand. Instead of replacing this vehicle with another Mazda, we will be taking our business elsewhere. We plan to walk across the street and purchase a Toyota because, after everything we have experienced, reliability, accountability, and customer confidence are far more important than brand loyalty. ”
“ May 2026 and Dwayne Lane Mazda Still Sucks. They will screw you and smile while it happens. They actually enjoy your displeasure, anger and dissatisfaction and will put it in writing telling you. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THIS COMPANY. Buyer Beware. This dealership, the owner, and managemrnt will lie to your face and then put it in writing. The service department is incompetent. Anyone even thinking of purchasing a vehicle here needs to think twice. They will screw you. They will even put it into writing how they will screw you over. The owner Thomas Lane cannot be contacted when you have a serious complaint. The Mazda Corporation was worse and will not escalate a complaint. The owner Thomas Lane would not contact us for a resolution. We lost thousands of dollars in repairs on a brand new car. Very unpleasant experience at this dealership. They damaged our new car at 300 miles on the odometer right front of us. They put it in writing they would not fix the damage. General Manager and Sales Manager are both grossly incompetent and have zero knowledge of what customer service means and will put it writing. . ”
“ My experience with mazda service/parts department has not been positive, which means I will no longer buy Mazda products. ”
